NATURAL CORK
A member of the beech family, the cork oak tree grows in coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Relatively slow growing, these trees survive harsh conditions in depleted soil that support little else of value. There are examples of cork oak trees that are 400 to 500 years old though the average life expectancy would be 100 to 120 years. Unlike most trees where primary value is derived from the lumber of the trunk, cork is actually obtained from the bark of the tree. This unusually thick bark is made up of millions of tiny prism-shaped air pockets which create a resilient cushioned surface and lead to the assertion that, with cork, you are literally walking on air. Grown on farms and harvested every 9 to 11 years, the financial benefit lies not in felling trees but in keeping them alive and in production for generations. New finishing techniques and improved technologies have revived interest in cork in the past ten years. Though still a small fraction of the overall floor covering market, cork is enjoying a surge in popularity driven in large part by consumer demand.

BAMBOO
Bamboo grows in many regions of the world especially in warm climates where the earth is kept moist with frequent monsoons. Throughout Asia, from India to China, from the Philippines to Japan, bamboo thrives in natural forest lands. Twenty percent of the worlds bamboo grows in China, much of that in the wild. Today, due to increasing demand, it is being cultivated more and more in managed forests. In this region, bamboo is emerging as an important agricultural crop of increasing significance to struggling economies.

Bamboo is a member of the grass family. This fact goes a long way toward explaining several of bamboos unique characteristics. We are familiar with grass as a rapidly growing invasive plant, as is bamboo. Maturing to a height of 20 meters or more in a mere four years, bamboo is ready to harvest. And, like grass, cutting bamboo does not kill the plant. An extensive root system remains intact, allowing for rapid regeneration. This quality makes bamboo an ideal plant for areas threatened with the potentially devastating ecological effects of soil erosion.

There are many species of Bamboo. Tall and straight, Mao Zhu or Moso Bamboo is the species of choice for flooring fabrication. Natural Cork Bamboo uses only Mao Bamboo with 5 years of maturity, selecting the base of the stalk for its superior strength and hardness. The remainder of these stalks become consumer goods such as chopsticks, plywood sheeting, furniture, window blinds, and even pulp for paper products. Nothing is wasted in processing bamboo.

When it comes to the environment, cork and bamboo are a perfect combination. Both are renewable, are harvested with no harm to their natural habitat, and produce materials that promote a healthy environment.

The forest is privately owned and extensively managed under strict contains a plantation of 1.25 million trees 90% of which are pines. A notable tree the Pin Maritime; or Pinus Pinaster matures over 50 years and can live up to 20 years. The youngest and softest parts of the tree are used by the paper industry, while the rest is used for lumber and home furnishings.
